Privacy & Sovereignty

Local First

Folio is built on the principle of User Sovereignty. Your data belongs to you, and it should stay that way.

  • Local-Only Storage: All metadata, tags, and settings are stored in a local SQLite database on your machine.
  • No Tracking or Accounts: We don't want your email, your data, or your reading habits. There are no accounts to create.
  • Standard Formats: Your library data is stored in a clean, open format, making it easy to back up or export at any time.
  • Privacy by Design: Direct connections to metadata sources (like Google Books) are only made when you explicitly ask to search.

Installing on macOS

Since Folio is not signed with a paid developer certificate, you need to clear the quarantine attribute after moving the app to your Applications folder:
